In the vented subwoofers, the driver is located in the housing, on one side of which it has a bass reflex port. Such models are able to produce much lower bass than the closed low-frequency speakers, since the diffuser’s stroke increases. Vented subs are much more whimsical as it’s more difficult to tune it, otherwise, the speaker starts to buzz. They are designed for both music and movies, but vented subwoofers are more suitable for large rooms since they have a high volume.
Bandpass is a 2-volume case, between which the speaker is located. One space is necessary for placing the bass reflex, and the second one is the same closed box. This type of enclosure provides the lowest bass and maximum sound pressure. But it can’t draw the clarity of musical compositions. Bandpass is perfect for home theater systems because it provides the feeling when your sofa vibrates.
The subwoofer enclosure must be solid, otherwise, its vibration will generate frequencies that will give undesirable sound. - Passive subwoofers are models with no amplifier. They are connected either to a separate input of the amplifier or to the main speakers. With this connection, the amplifier gets an additional load. But this is not the only drawback. Passive crossovers can create a negative impact on the sound quality. Also, the passive subwoofer does not have the additional ability to adjust the sound, so it is better to take them seriously in different rooms.
An important factor is the size of the woofer. The length of a diffuser’s stroke and part of the nonlinear distortions depend on the dimensions of the model cabinet. The most common sizes of subwoofers that are recommended for home use: 10-inch, 12-inch, and 15-inch. There are no compact models with a thick and juicy bass. Same subs, which in comparison to others are small in size, lose their volume and sound quality. The 10-inch option is too small for large living rooms and can’t cover the necessary range. If you have enough space, it is worth choosing a larger sub. With other things being equal, it will sound better.
